There are several lawsuits seeking to block President Joe Biden's debt relief plan. Most recently, a legal challenge from six GOP-led states temporarily stopped the administration from starting to forgive borrowers' debt. Although their lawsuit was rejected by a federal judge, they have appealed.
Despite the pause, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona declared that the Biden administration was preparing for the forgiveness plan "full speed ahead."
President Biden said last week that his administration will beat back the states’ legal challenge and predicted cancellation would soon commence. “We’re going to win that case,”
Biden told one news channel when asked about the case. “I think in the next two weeks you’re going to see those checks going out.”
Student loan debt could be forgiven for millions of Americans who earn less than $125,000 a year. Those who received Pell Grants, federal aid for lower-income students, could see up to $20,000 forgiven. The debt relief plan aims to cancel as much as $10,000 in federal student loan debt.
